Beginning at the Mountain Magnolia near the entrance\, we’ll explore several varieties while learning about their history\, cultural significance\, and unique botanical features. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, take in the seasonal magnolia-inspired floral installations (through March 30) before ending on the Terrace\, where you’ll get to appreciate an original piece of Lan Su history. There\, we’ll take in the recently dedicated Fengchun (鳳春 “Phoenix of Spring”)—a magnolia tree that Suzhou landscape architect Ms. He chose for the garden 25-plus years ago when we first opened. \n\n\n\nBefore you go\, we invite you to stop by Yun Shui Teahouse to enjoy a cup of magnolia tea and truly soak in this special flower! \n\n\n\n\n\nTour Guides\n\n\n\n\nMarch 22 & 29: Ben\, Gardener\n\n\n\nApril 5 & 12: Patrick\, Head Gardener\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore About Ms. He’s Magnolia Tree\n\n\n\n\n\nMs. He guides the original design of Lan Su with Suzhou artisans.\n\n\n\n\n\nCurator of Horticulture Josie Losh holds a scroll in front of Ms. He’s magnolia tree\, dedicated in September 2025. \n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of Lan Su’s 25th-anniversary celebration in September 2025\, we were honored to rename one of our magnolia trees after Ms. He Fengchun\, former Director of the Suzhou Garden Design Institute. Members of the Suzhou Garden Bureau and Suzhou city administrator delegation joined us for the unveiling ceremony\, continuing decades of cultural exchange with our sister city. \n\n\n\nMs. He was a driving force behind Lan Su’s original design and plant collections\, and Lan Su was her very first garden design project—a connection she treasures deeply. DESCRIPTION:The Portland Go Club provides interactive teachings on the rules\, strategies\, and history of Weiqi. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11 AM – 1 PM | Every 3rd Sunday\, April 19 – September 20\, 2026 \n\n\n\nWeiqi\, also known as Go\, holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously played strategy game globally\, with origins dating back at least 3\,500 years. While its rules can be grasped in mere minutes\, the game’s strategies and historical significance are vast. As part of our ongoing cultural programs\, the Portland Go Club will provide teachings and demonstrations on the rules\, strategies\, and history of Weiqi\, considered one of the four traditional Scholarly Arts. Attendees will have the opportunity to observe live demonstrations and engage in Weiqi gameplay with volunteers from the Portland Go Club. \n\n\n\n\nGet Admission\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Portland Go Club\n\n\n\nThe Portland Go Club\, established in 1977\, has been facilitating Go/Weiqi meetups and events for nearly 50 years in the Portland area. PGC hosts various community events including an annual Statewide tournament\, workshops taught by Professional Weiqi players\, educational tabling at cultural events\, and workshops for new players. SUMMARY:Limei Lai Art Show: Temperature in Life
DESCRIPTION:On display through June 21\, 2026 | Free with admission or membership \n\n\n\nExplore intricate fabric installations by Limei Lai\, a Portland-based Chinese American artist. In her own words: “On top of a chaotic\, messy\, tangled\, frayed\, knotted forest of seemingly random threads\, tapestry finds order and beauty\, much like art and life.” \n\n\n\nThis installation is in collaboration with the Many Bridges exhibition at Blackfish Gallery running through May 30.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Installation\n\n\n\nSeries 1: Indoor black and white embroidery work\n\n\n\nThis series of works are reflections of my past. Thinking about intergenerational communication and cultural conflict. The narratives are quite clear on the composition of the work\, while the underlining thoughts are the daily constant practice of do and undo cultural learnings.  \n\n\n\nSeries 2: Outdoor colorful embroidery work\n\n\n\nThis series of work is made with the idea of we situate ourselves in a safe\, soft place for trust and connection. The artist’s hope is that these mini sculptures can accompany the trees\, can dance in the wind\, and can sing if humans shake them\, move them to a different place\, or dance with them. They have a little red heart in them that is ready to sing and dance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEngage with the Artist — Childhood Play Memory Exchange\n\n\n\nSunday\, May 10 | 3-5 PM | Free with admission or membership \n\n\n\nArtist Limei Lai invites the community to contribute to the installation by sharing a moment of your childhood play. Place your memory in one of the fabric pieces hanging in the Scholar’s Courtyard as a temporary home\, then they’ll go to Blackfish Gallery to be hung under a swing and create a communal sculpture. \n\n\n\n\nLearn More\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Statement\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWeaving experiences of her 30 years in China and 15 years in the U.S.\, Limei makes textile pieces about connections and communications. The idea is that memory exchange creates a present communication. It exists in time\, makes space\, constructs identity\, and situates us in a closer connection.
