SUMMARY:Limei Lai Art Show: Temperature in Life
DESCRIPTION:On display through June 21\, 2026 | Free with admission or membership \n\n\n\nExplore intricate fabric installations by Limei Lai\, a Portland-based Chinese American artist. In her own words: “On top of a chaotic\, messy\, tangled\, frayed\, knotted forest of seemingly random threads\, tapestry finds order and beauty\, much like art and life.” \n\n\n\nThis installation is in collaboration with the Many Bridges exhibition at Blackfish Gallery running through May 30.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Installation\n\n\n\nSeries 1: Indoor black and white embroidery work\n\n\n\nThis series of works are reflections of my past. Thinking about intergenerational communication and cultural conflict. The narratives are quite clear on the composition of the work\, while the underlining thoughts are the daily constant practice of do and undo cultural learnings.  \n\n\n\nSeries 2: Outdoor colorful embroidery work\n\n\n\nThis series of work is made with the idea of we situate ourselves in a safe\, soft place for trust and connection. The artist’s hope is that these mini sculptures can accompany the trees\, can dance in the wind\, and can sing if humans shake them\, move them to a different place\, or dance with them. They have a little red heart in them that is ready to sing and dance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEngage with the Artist — Childhood Play Memory Exchange\n\n\n\nSunday\, May 10 | 3-5 PM | Free with admission or membership \n\n\n\nArtist Limei Lai invites the community to contribute to the installation by sharing a moment of your childhood play. Place your memory in one of the fabric pieces hanging in the Scholar’s Courtyard as a temporary home\, then they’ll go to Blackfish Gallery to be hung under a swing and create a communal sculpture. \n\n\n\n\nLearn More\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Statement\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWeaving experiences of her 30 years in China and 15 years in the U.S.\, Limei makes textile pieces about connections and communications. The idea is that memory exchange creates a present communication. It exists in time\, makes space\, constructs identity\, and situates us in a closer connection. She believes that we all have a burning kind heart in us that could share some warmth by creating a communal moment. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParking & Directions\n\n\n\nFree Lan Su Parking\n\n\n\nThere is free first come\, first served parking in our sister lot next to the garden at 424 NW Third Avenue. Additional metered parking and garages are available on surrounding streets.

SUMMARY:Threading Together Show & Tell: China
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for Threading Together Show & Tell\, an interactive visitor experience that brings the stories behind traditional attire to life. This program is part of our Threading Together: AANHPI Traditional Attire Exhibit. \n\n\n\nOn May 22\, step into traditional Chinese style with Micheal Clendenen. \n\n\n\nThe program will conclude with a 30 minute talk featuring two pairs of three inch “golden lotus” (三寸金蓮) bound foot shoes from the speaker’s personal collection. Through these artifacts\, photographs\, and shared stories\, the audience will gain a deeper understanding of the history of foot binding in China\, along with its related customs\, and a more nuanced perspective on Chinese dress and this distinctive aspect of social and cultural history. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet Our Program Partner: Micheal Clendenen \n\n\n\nMichael Clendenen lived in Taiwan for over 30 years after moving there in 1974\, where he and his wife Sandra developed a deep interest in Asian antiques. Their collection grew over time from small objects to large\, significant pieces\, reflecting decades of exploration and discovery. Fluent in conversational Mandarin\, Michael was able to engage directly with collectors and vendors throughout his journey. After returning to the United States in 2006\, their collection filled a 40 foot shipping container. Today\, he enjoys sharing these objects and their stories through engaging show and tell experiences whenever possible. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParking & Directions\n\n\n\nFree Lan Su Parking\n\n\n\nThere is free first come\, first served parking in our sister lot next to the garden at 424 NW Third Avenue. SUMMARY:Blake Robert at Lan Su
DESCRIPTION:You’ve seen him\, his guitar\, and his rubber duck… Now Blake Robert is making a stop at Lan Su Chinese Garden! \n\n\n\nKnown on Instagram and TikTok for traveling the world with only the money he makes playing guitar\, Blake is bringing his music and stories to Portland as part of his US tour. Come spend the afternoon in the garden\, hear Blake play\, and welcome him to our city and one of its greatest treasures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet Blake\n\n\n\nBlake Robert is an Austin-based musician making upbeat pop rock\, centered on rhythm and connection. His approach is simple: a guitar\, a story\, and a smile.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBlake travels the globe with his guitar\, making friends everywhere he goes. His viral series “Surviving [Destination] on No Money” documents what it’s like to get by solely off the money he earns playing his guitar in various international destinations. The project captures what it really takes to build a music career from the ground up — part road trip\, part survival\, and all music.  \n\n\n\nBlake has already performed in fourteen countries around the world\, building an impressive international fanbase early in his music career\, and garnering press coverage in both the US and Canada. \n\n\n\n\n\nBlake’s songs reflect the same mindset that drives his journey: grounded optimism and bringing people together. His debut album will be released in summer 2026. \n\n\n\n\nListen Now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParking & Directions\n\n\n\nFree Lan Su Parking\n\n\n\nThere is free first come\, first served parking in our sister lot next to the garden at 424 NW Third Avenue.
