DESCRIPTION:Sundays\, March 22 & 29; April 5 & 12 | 2-3 PM | Free with admission or membership \n\n\n\nJoin one of our gardeners for a guided stroll through Lan Su’s magnolia collection during Magnolia Festival. Beginning at the Mountain Magnolia near the entrance\, we’ll explore several varieties while learning about their history\, cultural significance\, and unique botanical features. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, take in the seasonal magnolia-inspired floral installations (through March 30) before ending on the Terrace\, where you’ll get to appreciate an original piece of Lan Su history. There\, we’ll take in the recently dedicated Fengchun (鳳春 “Phoenix of Spring”)—a magnolia tree that Suzhou landscape architect Ms. He chose for the garden 25-plus years ago when we first opened. \n\n\n\nBefore you go\, we invite you to stop by Yun Shui Teahouse to enjoy a cup of magnolia tea and truly soak in this special flower! \n\n\n\n\n\nTour Guides\n\n\n\n\nMarch 22 & 29: Ben\, Gardener\n\n\n\nApril 5 & 12: Patrick\, Head Gardener\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore About Ms. He’s Magnolia Tree\n\n\n\n\n\nMs. He guides the original design of Lan Su with Suzhou artisans.\n\n\n\n\n\nCurator of Horticulture Josie Losh holds a scroll in front of Ms. He’s magnolia tree\, dedicated in September 2025. \n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of Lan Su’s 25th-anniversary celebration in September 2025\, we were honored to rename one of our magnolia trees after Ms. He Fengchun\, former Director of the Suzhou Garden Design Institute. Members of the Suzhou Garden Bureau and Suzhou city administrator delegation joined us for the unveiling ceremony\, continuing decades of cultural exchange with our sister city. \n\n\n\nMs. He was a driving force behind Lan Su’s original design and plant collections\, and Lan Su was her very first garden design project—a connection she treasures deeply. She is also fascinated by the cycles and rhythms of life\, and find endless inspiration even in the tiniest elements of nature. It is her passion to promote the significance of the natural world\, healing\, and conservation through art.   \n\n\n\nRobin Phillips Occhipinti is a multidisciplinary artist and designer who has a love for many creative mediums\, and sharing the joy of art with others. Active in local arts organizations including Oregon Botanical Artists and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators NW\, she has exhibited her art locally and nationally for many years\, and also teaches workshops. Her artwork has been featured in galleries\, cultural centers\, and art museums\, including the CICA Museum in Gimpo-si\, South Korea; the Academy of Science in Canberra\, Australia; American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington DC; and the Annmarie Sculpture Garden in Dowell\, Maryland. She has been in residence at Zion National Park and PLAYA: Center for the Intersection of Art and Science. She has also been a featured speaker at Portland State College of the Arts: School of Art + Design\, Red Butte Garden and Arboretum\, and Southern Utah University. Her book The Insect Artist: How to Observe\, Draw\, and Paint Butterflies\, Bees\, and More was released by Timber Press on March 12\, 2024. These are short 30-min sessions that showcase a horticultural wonder\, technique\, or tool that our passionate horticulturists want to share with fellow plant enthusiasts. Each session will shine a light on the behind-the-scenes operations of the garden\, highlight a plant at its peak beauty\, or focus on recent improvements to our collection. \n\n\n\nEach session will explore a different part of the garden based on that week’s topic. When you arrive\, please check in with the front door staff or volunteers for the exact location to meet in. \n\n\n\n\nGet Admission\n\n\n\n\nThis program is FREE with garden admission or membership. With all materials provided and admission included\, all you need to bring is yourself! \n\n\n\nWe’re bringing this series back by popular demand and newly reimagined in partnership with the Oregon Botanical Artists (OBA). This immersive afternoon experience invites you to slow down\, look closely\, and connect with plants through tea\, conversation\, and hands-on art-making. Our August 28 Bamboo session with Robin Phillips Occhipinti will use graphite and colored pencil as the medium. \n\n\n\nEach session weaves together horticulture\, tea culture\, and botanical art in a relaxed\, welcoming setting: \n\n\n\n\nLearn the plant up close: A Lan Su gardener leads a close-up botanical show-and-tell\, sharing seasonal plant facts\, cultural stories\, and growing insights.\n\n\n\nTaste the season: Enjoy a sampling of seasonal teas from Yun Shui Teahouse.\n\n\n\nCreate botanical art: An OBA artist guides a full botanical art class inspired by the featured plant.\n\n\n\n\nWhether you’re returning to Steep & Paint or joining for the first time\, this refreshed program offers an even richer way to experience Lan Su. She is also fascinated by the cycles and rhythms of life\, and find endless inspiration even in the tiniest elements of nature. It is her passion to promote the significance of the natural world\, healing\, and conservation through art.   \n\n\n\nRobin Phillips Occhipinti is a multidisciplinary artist and designer who has a love for many creative mediums\, and sharing the joy of art with others. Active in local arts organizations including Oregon Botanical Artists and the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators NW\, she has exhibited her art locally and nationally for many years\, and also teaches workshops. Robin holds a BFA degree\, a Certificate in Natural Science Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and is currently completing a Certificate in Botanical Illustration through the New York Botanical Garden.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeet Our Partner: Oregon Botanical Artists (OBA)  \n\n\n\nOregon Botanical Artists is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting contemporary botanical art while honoring its long-standing traditions. Founded in 2012\, the organization supports a diverse community of artists who celebrate the beauty and diversity of plant life through detailed and scientifically informed artwork.
