Meet Lan Su featured artist Rachel Austin and learn about her work and process. An exhibition of her work is on display in the garden in February & March, 2019.
Artwork is available for purchase through the Garden Shop.
Rachel Austin’s paintings are inspired by visits to the Lan Su Chinese Garden throughout the year. These watercolors are of the soft, abstracted shadows of plants found in the garden. Gardens and nature have the ability to ground us when feeling anxious or overwhelmed and these paintings attempt to capture the tranquility felt when among plants. Gardens, especially Lan Su, are thoughtful works of living art, a slow moving sculpture that changes in different light and seasons. Rachel’s paintings show an abstracted view of some of the plants that make up this peaceful garden.
Portland artist Rachel Austin is inspired by the quiet beauty of gardens and her love of plants. This series of botanical watercolors includes soft, abstracted shadows found in the Lan Su Chinese Garden throughout the year. Her paintings are created with watercolor and acrylic on wood to create understated and meditative pieces. Rachel is self taught and has been a full time artist since 2006 when, after getting a degree in finance, she realized art was probably a better path for her. Rachel lives and works in Portland with retailers across the country selling her paintings, cards and prints.
Lan Su Chinese Garden invites artists working in all mediums to submit images for review for public exhibition in the garden in the 2020 calendar year. Exhibitions run generally one-to-two months in one or more of the enclosed pavilions within the garden. As 2020 is the 20th anniversary of the garden, of particular interest are works from artists with botanical and Chinese cultural themes although all manner of relevant subjects will be considered. Please include a brief biography stating work mediums and inspirations, as well as details about size, format, and, if possible, retail gallery price ranges for the bulk of your work. If selected, agreements will be entered into for exhibition sales on a commission basis. Review of images begins immediately upon receipt.
The deadline for submitting images is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 29, 2019. All artists considered for exhibition will be contacted for follow up. Submissions received after this time may or may not be considered for future shows. Email submissions to email@example.com; no calls or drop-ins please.
