Alice Debo creates botanical art using a range of mixed media and layering techniques that investigate light, form, and depth. Her upbringing resulted in a deep respect for nature and equipped her with astute observational skills resulting in her stylized, yet botanically accurate, depictions of flora. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Industrial Design, Alice moved to California where she practiced design for seven years before moving to Portland, Oregon in 2013. Alice has shown her work in a solo exhibition at Lan Su Chinese Garden in 2018, as well as in other galleries around Portland, Salem, and Cannon Beach.
Carol Putnam grew up surrounded by the wildflowers and brilliant autumn foliage of New England. Gardening and nature photography were favorite hobbies for much of her life. Although her career as a medical professional engaged her for many years, her admiration of portraits by botanical illustrators inspired her to explore her creative side and begin classes in watercolor painting. Her favorite subjects are the same ones she spent years nurturing in her garden and photographing in nature. She paints plants in both contemporary and traditional styles, and enjoys the challenge of capturing detail, light and shadow in vivid watercolor.
Dorota Haber-Lehigh holds B.A degree in Art, B.A. degree in International Studies with a focus on indigenous cultures, and a master’s degree in teaching. She also holds a graduate bilingual certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language. She has earned a Diploma in Botanical Illustration from Society of Botanical Artists in London in May 2019. She is a member of Oregon Botanical Artists, Pacific Northwest Botanical Artists and American Society of Botanical Artists. Recently Dorota was an Artist in Residence at Cannon Beach Arts Association in February and March, 2019. Dorota exhibits and teaches drawing regionally. Dorota enjoys depicting flora of the Pacific Northwest, often native plants. She is interested in portraying individual plants with their sculptural and ephemeral beauty. Her passion is to bring attention to importance of ecological diversity of nature and emphasize nature’s and human fragility. Dorota uses artist quality colored pencils such as Faber Castell Polychromos or Caran d’Ache and 100% cotton hot press 140 lbs acid free paper.
Jane Levy Campbell’s life and paintings are combinations of the unexpected. She grew up in the heart of Appalachia and studied at Phillips Exeter Academy, Princeton and Yale in the early days of co-education there. Her watercolors range from postcard size to compositions a surprising twenty feet long. She combines the sparseness of Asian composition and formal Chinese brush study with a western sense of light and structure in her still-lifes, landscapes and botanical studies. An avid gardener and hiker, Campbell finds constant inspiration and subjects for her watercolors and drawings. She enjoys the challenge of creating an illusion of solid form and distinct time and place from the ethereally insubstantial materials of watercolor. Her work is in private and corporate collections across the U.S. and in Europe and Israel.
Janet Parker holds a certificate in Botanical Art from the New York Botanical Garden. Her studies there rekindled an old love of drawing, and sparked a new love, of looking up-close at nature. A 1989 graduate of Parsons School of Design, she has worked as an art director and graphic designer for several magazines and book publishers over the last 30 years. After moving from New York to Portland, Oregon in 2009, she helped found Oregon Botanical Artists, an active group with about 40 members. She also enjoys teaching classes and workshops in Botanical Art in and around Portland. Her artwork, Resplendent Bigleaf Maple Leaf was recently accepted into the American Society of Botanical Artists 22nd International Exhibition, on display at the Marin Art & Garden Center in Ross, California, September and October 2019.www.janetparker-art-design.com
Kristine Mackessy spent her career in the Design and Printing industry after completing her B.A. in Art. Growing up in the foothills of Angeles National Forest, Kristine’s love of the outdoors and of art developed at an early age. Her interest in botanical art came naturally after spending time painting along the river’s and trails of Oregon. Kristine works with a number of mediums, frequently painting ‘en plein air’, and usually has a sketchbook in hand.
Kip Nordstrom is a Landscape Designer and Garden Maker by profession.Painting botanicals is a new passion for her!Having used plants of all types and sizes in her designs, she finds she suddenly “sees” plants in a totally different and exciting way, up close and personal. As a member of Oregon Botanical Artists she has found friendships and gifted mentors in the group. Learning to paint botanicals has taught Kip to hone her painting skills, but more importantly, to become disciplined in her work, and to persevere in learning her new technique.
Marilyn Lindberg lives in Milwaukie and is a Portland native. She has studied botanical drawing and illustration with Janet Parker, a founding member of the Oregon Botanical Artists. Currently, Marilyn is taking the Distance Learning Diploma Course from the Society of Botanical Artists in the United Kingdom. Marilyn’s medium is colored pencil. After years of developing and tending an extensive garden, her pleasure is to bring plants into the studio for a portrait. The opportunity to express her love of plants artistically has deepened her relationship with the wonders of the plant kingdom.
Nora Sherwood joined the field of science illustration as a mid-life career changer, after graduating from the University of Washington’s Natural Science Illustration certificate program in Spring 2014. Intricate details and patterns found in nature are endlessly fascinating; She enjoys the challenge of portraying them on paper. Watercolor – her primary medium – is a highly technical but powerful medium that allows me to construct illustrations in layers, always considering pigment characteristics and color theory to build forms and create depth. In addition to watercolor, she also work extensively with colored pencils, pen and ink, graphite and scratchboard. She creates custom illustrations for clients, working with governmental entities, agencies, museums, design firms, scientists, and individuals to develop high quality custom art to fulfill their needs.
