Ningshu Fang was born in Shanghai in 1979, the first year of China’s One Child Policy. Not long after her first birthday, her parents sent her to Shanghai to live with her grandparents for better living conditions and better education. Her grandmother, an art professor in the architecture department of Tong Ji University, got her interested in art when she was in kindergarten. In the years that followed she was thrust into the traditional Chinese education system, but kept her dream of becoming an artist alive. In the meditative moment of drawing, she is at peace with herself, and the most precious thing is that she is with her grandmother again.
Lan Su hosts several artists each year, from the Pacific Northwest and beyond, to show work in the pavilions of the garden. From classical Chinese styles to contemporary work, each show offers a new experience of Lan Su Yuan.
