Join us for a meet and greet with Lan Su’s featured artist, Stephanie Brown. An exhibition of her work will be on display at Lan Su Chinese Garden in December, 2018.
All work is available for purchase through the Garden Shop.
Stephanie Brown is an interior designer/architectural color consultant by training, and a botanical photographer by happy accident. Brown has refurbished numerous historic buildings, from turn-of the-century bungalows to large commercial structures such as Southeast Portland’s Academy Theater. Her passion for plant photography was sparked by a different sort of renovation project: the redesign of her own backyard. What began as an effort to catalog landscaping possibilities morphed over time into a daily practice and artistic obsession.
She uses photography to create vibrant, highly-detailed botanical studies. Intrigued by the many ways in which rainwater, direct sunlight and deep shadow can influence the appearance of petals, branches and leaves, she especially enjoys capturing images which give the impression of being illuminated from within. Rather than staging shots in a studio setting, Brown prefers to document plants in their natural environment. She photographs flora wherever she encounters it: in her own backyard, on sidewalks and street corners, in public parks, and along the many lush hiking trails of the Pacific Northwest. When not photographing plants or rescuing dilapidated buildings, Brown can often be found teaching in the Interior Design department at Portland Community College.
