Enjoy special extended hours in the garden from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. during Chinese New Year (February 5 - 19, 2019)X
Join us for a meet and greet with Lan Su’s featured artist, Scott Fitzwater. An exhibition of their work will be on display at Lan Su Chinese Garden in February & March, 2019.
All work is available for purchase through the Garden Shop.
Scott Fitzwater makes mosaics primarily with slate that he sources from salvaged roofing tile and material that he's harvested from slate quarries in California. He likes slate because the material speaks to him. He can cut and break slate into a range of thicknesses and lengths that allow him to fully express the organic, abstract and geometric designs upon which he thrives. These unique qualities of cut slate also enable him to “draw” and convey the expressive qualities of movement and mood of the line. He even gleans creative inspiration from the limited, available color palette of slate. In addition, he has nurtured an ongoing exploration of mosaic sculptural composition.
Scott Fitzwater is a Portland, OR artist who has been creating mosaics since 2008 when he retired from high tech working as a software engineer. He is largely a self-taught mosaic artist and has experimented with many techniques and materials. He also has studied under several well known mosaic artists. His pieces have been in exhibitions in North America and Europe and have won several awards. He works primarily with slate that he fashions into abstract wall and sculptural art. Scott is a member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists and a member of the NW Mosaic Artists Alliance.
Lan Su Chinese Garden invites artists working in all mediums to submit images for review for public exhibition in the garden in the 2020 calendar year. Exhibitions run generally one-to-two months in one or more of the enclosed pavilions within the garden. As 2020 is the 20th anniversary of the garden, of particular interest are works from artists with botanical and Chinese cultural themes although all manner of relevant subjects will be considered. Please include a brief biography stating work mediums and inspirations, as well as details about size, format, and, if possible, retail gallery price ranges for the bulk of your work. If selected, agreements will be entered into for exhibition sales on a commission basis. Review of images begins immediately upon receipt.
The deadline for submitting images is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 29, 2019. All artists considered for exhibition will be contacted for follow up. Submissions received after this time may or may not be considered for future shows. Email submissions to firstname.lastname@example.org; no calls or drop-ins please.
