Join us as we celebrate the art of penjing or “traditional tray landscapes” with a display from June 15 - 26, 2019. Originating in China — known in Japan as bonsai — penjing is a living art of plants and stones in a pot. This extension of garden art consists of carefully pruned and chisels trees often paired with stone in beautiful pottery to depict a complete composition of nature in miniature. Lan Su is excited to present this lesser known version of bonsai, partnering with Robert Cho and Asia Pacific Gardening, local penjing artist Mark Vossbrink as well as other local Penjing artists and contributors.
The art of penjing was first mentioned in China around 2,000 years ago as an expression of peace and tranquility to fulfill our desires to be a part of nature. Often portraying scenes of every day life in China, penjing speaks to the aesthetic and culture that has been cultivating plants and gardens for millennia. Artistic interpretations of carefully pruned trees in composition with stones convey personal expression and emotions. Plants, soil and stone depict a complete picture of a landscape or a landscape with water.
Included free with Lan Su membership or admission; no registration is required.
