Street Parking
On-street metered parking (90 minutes, 2 hour, and 5 hour) is available around the garden at $2 per hour Monday through Saturday from 8 AM – 7 PM and Sundays from 1–7 PM. On Sunday before 1 PM and on designated holidays, on-street parking is free.

Parking Garages
A variety of private and city parking lots are also located within a few minutes walk of the garden. One of the nearest is the 220 Building located at 220 NW 2nd Avenue (the corner of Everett Street and 2nd Avenue). Naito & Davis Parking is also four minutes walking distance from the Lan Su front gate.
Bus / Group Tour Parking
We do not offer any special parking for school buses or other large-group vehicles. Please reference the information above for our parking recommendations.
If you are parking in the neighborhood, we recommend not to leave unnecessary valuables in your vehicle. The simplest way to protect your valuables is to keep them with you or keep them in the trunk out of sight.
How can I get to Lan Su by public transit?
+
Lan Su is easily accessible by buses and by MAX, Portland’s light rail train service. The garden is located at the Old Town Chinatown stop on the Blue and Red MAX lines and accessible by buses 1, 4, 5, 8, 10, 16, 33, 40, and 77.
To reach the garden from locations throughout the city, visit TriMet’s Trip Planner, which can provide door-to-door directions using public transit.
The garden is 1/4 mile southeast of Amtrak‘s Union Station.
Bicycles are also available for rent by the hour or day through BIKETOWN, Portland’s bike-share system. The closest BIKETOWN station is located directly outside the garden’s east wall on NW 2nd Avenue at NW Everett St.

The garden is one city block or approximately 40,000 square feet. Lake Zither at the center is about 8,000 square feet.

A Universal Access Map is available at the Ticket Booth and Host Stand.
Note: The second floor of Yun Shui Teahouse is not wheelchair-friendly at this time as stairs are required for access. The first floor is still ADA accessible.
Wheelchairs
The garden does not provide wheelchairs, but you are welcome to bring your own.
Caregivers
Lan Su honors complimentary entry for one caregiver of each visitor with a mobility issue necessitating an extra helping hand.
Do you have audio tours?

Yes! You can access an audio tour in the Discover Lan Su app. The module is called “Explore with the Dragonfish” and provides detailed stories about Lan Su’s scholar garden components while moving you along key points of interest.
Do you have tours with ASL interpretation?
+
We do not currently have any tour guides fluent in ASL. If you know someone who would be a good fit, please have them reach out to [email protected] to learn about becoming a Lan Su Guide.
Are there gender-neutral restrooms?
+
Yes! There are two gender-neutral restrooms at Lan Su Chinese Garden:
- Between the waterfall and Yun Shui Teahouse entrance;
- Second floor of Yun Shui Teahouse (steps required for access).
There is also a set of men’s and women’s restrooms next to Reflections in Clear Ripples (Lounge Hall).
Can I bring a stroller?
+
Strollers are permitted, but keep in mind that paths are narrow and no storage is available.
Are my kids free to explore the garden?
+
We love when kids visit Lan Su! We recommend experiencing the free mobile scavenger hunts on the Discover Lan Su Visitor App, or picking up a free Discovery Guide from the Host Stand.
Children under age 13 must be supervised at all times while visiting the garden. For the safety of visitors and horticultural specimens, it is very important to stay on the garden paths and not enter the planting beds. Please do not allow children to pick flowers or otherwise damage plants in the garden. Climbing and running are also prohibited for everyone’s safety.
Can I bring my pet?
+
No. We love our furry friends too, but please leave your pets at home. Only service animals are permitted in the garden.
Can I smoke or vape anywhere?
+
No. Lan Su Chinese Garden is a completely smoke- and tobacco-free property, including the surrounding sidewalks. To provide a healthy, safe environment for visitors, volunteers, staff, and the plant collections, Lan Su prohibits smoking of any type—including vaping and electronic cigarettes.
Does Lan Su have food or drinks?
+
Yes! Yun Shui Teahouse, located inside The Tower of Cosmic Reflections, is a two-story teahouse overlooking Lan Su’s Lake Zither. It also offers outdoor seating in the warmer months. (Admission required for access.)
At Yun Shui Teahouse, we provide a complete tea experience, including traditional pots and gaiwan tea service.
- Our tea menu comprises a variety of Chinese and Taiwanese teas sourced directly from China, as well as local tea-makers.
- The food menu includes comfort foods prepared in house and locally sourced pastries.
- Yun Shui also carries a variety of tea, teaware, and accessories you can shop for gifting and at-home use.
Can I bring my own food or drinks?
+
Outside drinks are permitted within the garden only if they have a lid. For the safety of all visitors, glass bottles are never permitted in the garden.
Small snacks for toddlers or babies are the only outside food permitted in the garden.
Is there a gift shop at Lan Su?
+
Yes! The Garden Shop is located to the left of the Ticket Booth in the Entrance Plaza. The hours are the same as the garden. Admission is not required if you only want to stop into the Garden Shop and not venture further into the garden.
If you’re looking for tea items specifically, Yun Shui Teahouse carries a variety of tea, including loose leaf and Pu-er, teaware, and accessories. (Admission required for access.)
Photography & Videography
Can I take pictures in the garden?
+
You are encouraged and welcome to take photographs of Lan Su Chinese Garden for your own use and enjoyment, with the exception of portrait photography (see below). Since our pathways are narrow, we ask that you be courteous of other guests by not blocking pedestrian or wheelchair access, bridges, or patio areas while you enjoy taking photos of the garden.
Portrait Photography
Lan Su Chinese Garden does not allow portrait photography during public hours. The garden pathways are narrow, and patio spaces can be busy with visitors, so portrait photos can inhibit the enjoyment of the garden by other visitors.
Portrait photography is defined as any group coming for the purpose of taking posed portrait photographs. This can be with a professional photographer or just a friend, but if the reason for the visit is taking posed portrait photos, we do not allow this during public hours. Examples of photo shoots include: engagement photos, wedding photos, prom photos, senior or graduation photos, and posed portrait photos in costumes/cosplay or other special attire.
Tripods & Other Equipment
Due to limited space on our pathways and for the enjoyment of all visitors, the garden cannot allow the use of tripods during normal business hours. Monopods are allowed at any time for personal photos, but they must remain on the pathways. You also can’t obstruct other visitors’ path or experience.
Large equipment and light reflectors are never allowed during public hours.
Drones
The garden is located in Old Town/Chinatown Portland, which is a traffic spot for helicopters. For the safety of our visitors and the quality of visits, we do not allow the use of drones during public hours.
Professional & Commercial Shoots
To preserve other visitors’ experience, professional and commercial photoshoots are not allowed during the garden’s regular public hours. You can rent the garden before we open or after we close for a private photo shoot, proposal, or other small event. This allows you to enjoy the opportunity to take your time with no visitors in the background, utilize professional equipment, or surprise your significant other. For any further questions, please contact [email protected] or fill out this form.
Can I sell my Lan Su photos?
+
Possibly. The image and design of the garden are copyrighted, and we ask that you do not sell or otherwise use your images for commercial activities including print, broadcast, or web advertising without proper permission. However, if you are a professional photographer and interested in including photos of the garden in your work, please check out our Artist Membership option.

Artist Member Hour also allows guests, but the intention is that all visitors are there to engage in their own creative processes.
