Happy Spring Equinox (Chunfen 春分)!
As I’m writing this, I just got back from a curator’s tour at Lan Su, and I can’t stop thinking about all the magnolias (木蘭花, Mùlán huā) in bloom! Their white, pink, and yellow flowers bring a vibrant burst of spring to the garden.
Did you know China is home to more magnolia species than any other country? These elegant flowers, with their soft fragrance and colorful petals, have been celebrated in Chinese culture for centuries. And they’re more than just beautiful— in traditional Chinese medicine, their buds (辛夷, xīnyí) are used to treat sinus issues. The unopened buds even resemble the tip of a calligraphy brush, earning them the nickname “木筆” (mùbǐ). How perfect as a gift for a scholar!

Now, when most people hear “magnolia” in Chinese—”木蘭” (Mùlan)—they think of the legendary warrior Hua Mulan. (Yes, that Mulan from Disney. And no, Disney, she’s not a princess!)
Let’s dive into Hua Mulan’s story! She’s the legendary warrior who took her father’s place in the army, serving for 12 years disguised as a man. Whether or not Mulan actually existed, her story lives on in the Ballad of Mulan (木蘭辭), where she’s driven by love for her family, not romance or rebellion. (And nope, no Mushu dragon either. Sorry, Disney!) Here’s a bit of the original ballad **:
「昨夜見軍帖, 可汗大點兵, 軍書十二卷, 卷卷有爺名。 阿爺無大兒, 木蘭無長兄, 願為市鞍馬, 從此替爺征。」
“Last night I saw the army notice. The Khan is calling for soldiers, the army list is twelve scrolls long, and my father’s name is on every scroll. My father has no grown son, And I, Mulan, have no older brother. I will buy a horse and saddle, and serve in my father’s place.”
Unlike some modern versions, the real Mulan wasn’t concerned with romance or adventure— Our girl simply wanted to protect her family and country. After years of service, Mulan turned down honors and returned to a quiet life. No dramatic twists, just courage and duty!
So next time you stroll through Lan Su and admire the magnolias, remember their beauty and the brave spirit of Mulan, who shares their name!
