How-to Workshop: Japanese Lion Dance with Portland Shishimai Kai
September 5 @ 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Saturday, Sept. 5 | 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM | Free with admission or membership
Experience Overview
Don’t miss the incredibly rare opportunity to experience a Japanese-style lion dance at Lan Su! We’re thrilled to have Portland Shishimai Kai join us to introduce shishimai, the traditional Japanese lion dance. There will be a discussion about the history and significance of this art form followed by a Q&A session. For anyone interested in trying shishimai, some of the movements will be taught during the hands-on portion of the workshop.
About Portland Shishimai Kai
Portland Shishimai Kai is dedicated to preserving the Edo Kotobuki Jishi (traditional celebratory shishimai of Tokyo) as well as Ryomen Odori (double mask dance) and Edo Bayashi (traditional festival music of Tokyo). The group is closely mentored by Kyosuke Suzuki, an integral member of Wakayama Taneo Shachu which is designated in Japan as a Nationally Important Intangible Cultural Asset in Folk Arts. The group founder and leader is Eien Hunter-Ishikawa. For more information, visit www.eienhunterishikawa.com.
