Experience Overview
CFAP’s youth lion dance team will perform a Southern-style Chinese lion dance to spread joy to visitors as we close out Lion Dance & Kung Fu Weekends. The southern lion dance originated in Guangdong, and it’s the style popular in Hong Kong, Macau, and the hometowns of overseas Chinese. The southern lion dance is a performance based on the study of a lion’s behavior, with an emphasis on actions like scratching, shaking the body, and even napping. Performances are vivid, entertaining, and often comical.
In Chinese culture, the lion symbolizes power, wisdom, and superiority. People perform lion dances at festivals or big occasions to bring good fortune and chase away evil spirits. Come join us and get some of that good luck for yourself!
About CFAP
Chinese Friendship Association of Portland (CFAP) is a nonprofit and community-based organization founded in 1993. With a focus on youth leadership development and education, they aim to foster a deep appreciation for Chinese culture and inspire the next generation through culturally enriching programs. They formed their youth lion and dragon dance team with the help of supportive parents.
