Lion Dance Performance: Portland Shishimai Kai
September 5 @ 1:00 PM – 1:30 PM

Saturday, Sept. 5 at 1:00 PM & Sunday, Sept. 6 at 4:00 PM | Free with admission or membership
Experience Overview
We’re thrilled to have Portland Shishimai Kai join us to perform shishimai, the traditional Japanese lion dance. This style is completely different from the colorful leaping lions you may be used to seeing during Lunar New Year and other Lan Su special events. Shishimai features a single costumed lion dancer alongside a group of musicians playing a gentler music than the traditional drums and cymbals of Chinese lion dance. Don’t miss this incredibly rare opportunity to experience another style of lion dance at Lan Su!
About Portland Shishimai Kai
Portland Shishimai Kai is dedicated to preserving the Edo Kotobuki Jishi (traditional celebratory shishimai of Tokyo) as well as Ryomen Odori (double mask dance) and Edo Bayashi (traditional festival music of Tokyo). The group is closely mentored by Kyosuke Suzuki, an integral member of Wakayama Taneo Shachu which is designated in Japan as a Nationally Important Intangible Cultural Asset in Folk Arts. The group founder and leader is Eien Hunter-Ishikawa. For more information, visit www.eienhunterishikawa.com.
