As a window to China and its people and culture, Lan Su Chinese Garden fosters trust, and seeks commonality among us all. It strives to inspire and educate everyone in our community. A visit to Lan Su does not end at the edges of its walls, it begins as first steps into a whole new world that is vastly different from ours; a world with thousands of years of history and culture; a world in which its industrious people dream of a better life for themselves and their children.
We are dreaming the same dreams and having the same aspirations for our friends and families. However, Asian Americans in general, and Chinese Americans in particular, have always been regarded as the OTHER instead of US despite the fact that their ancestors came here centuries ago and helped build the transcontinental railroads, and sacrificed their lives to the success story of America. We are saddened to see history repeating itself today. After enduring centuries of bias, discrimination and unfair treatment, a rising tide of anti-Asian violence is upon us again. The Lan Su board stands firm with our Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities in Portland and Oregon.
We welcome anyone into the sanctuary of Lan Su, to see, hear, taste and feel its beauty, tranquility and harmony. You will not find violence and hate in Lan Su’s vocabulary. It is filled with love and hope.
