Deep Calls unto Deep the Interplay of Ancient Recreation and Contemporary Spirit
“Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me” — Bible Psalm 42:7
As an Asian immigrant artist, I have drawn inspiration from both Eastern and Western art to appreciate the natural landscapes of NW United States area, and give glory to God's beautiful creations.
The essence of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy is an expression of humanity and nature using observations and brushstrokes. Through various millennia-old script styles such as seal script, clerical script, cursive script, running script, and regular script, I echo the nature of call and response within the Scriptures.
May viewers resonate with both the traditional and contemporary elements in my works.
Terri Hsing, hailing from Taiwan, is deeply entangled in Chinese culture and has devoted her life to traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting, mentored by a range of calligraphy masters. Her Chinese painting journey began with Master Tian-qi Rong( 容天圻), a disciple of Masters Da-qian Zhan ( 張大千)and Chang-shuo Wu (吳昌碩). After studying under Dr. Cheng-du Zi (資成都), Professor Zhen-ji Lee ( 李貞吉) who is a third-generation disciple of You-ren Yu(于右任), Terri has dedicated over three decades to Chinese Calligraphy.
Since immigrating to the US in 2002, she teaches art and Chinese traditions, blending her heritage with American culture. Her unique art style blends eastern and western influences and has been exhibited in Taiwan, Washington and Oregon. She has conducted numerous art workshops, promoting Chinese calligraphy and painting, and established Hsing Creations (守心書室) to teach her art.
Join her for an artist opening Sunday, May 12th, 2:30 - 4:00 pm.
You can find out more about her through her instagram at @hsing_creations.
Artist Statement:
Mending
One day, I encountered some beautiful mended jeans. “I wish relationships can be mended and still beautiful and sweet.” I thought to myself. But, what if we could?
The complexity of intergenerational communication brings difficulty in understanding. Conflicts cause fragmentations. In ceramic art, there is a gold repair to make it functional and beautiful again. What if relationships can have sweet repair?
If we have the mindset of doing repair as a daily practice, then beauty and joy can be found daily.
“On top of a chaotic, messy, tangled, frayed, knotted forest of seemingly random threads, tapestry finds order and beauty, so do art and life.” - Limei Lai
Limei Lai enjoys working with paint, fabric and clay. She is curious about how memories and experience work with objects to create cultural value and aesthetic value in spaces, thus addressing and commenting past and present to encourage good changes. Her interactive community engagement installation focuses on creating spaces and voices for intergenerational communication. Art as an experience not only visually critiques, questions, reflects, but also celebrates.
Limei is the artist member at Blackfish Gallery. She was the founder and curator of Playground Gallery and the vice-president of Oregon Chinese Artist Association. Her works were shown in Local 14 Art Show, The Arts Center at Corvallis, Ashland Fiber Arts Collective, Newport Visual Arts Center, Paragon Gallery, Lansu Garden, The Place, PNCA, PSU, Red E Cafe Gallery, Playground Gallery. Her murals were in north Portland and Chinatown Portland.
