Lan Su Chinese Garden is pleased to announce the appointment of Venus Sun as the Vice President of Culture and Community, effective July 1, 2023.
With more than eight years of dedicated service to Lan Su, Sun's journey began in 2015 as a volunteer for the garden. Her unwavering commitment, strategic acumen, and passion for Chinese culture have propelled her through various roles within the organization. She has excelled as a Program Coordinator, Volunteer Assistant Manager, Director of Volunteers and Education, Director of Communications and Education, and most recently, as the Senior Director of Culture and Community Engagement.
Originally from Taipei, Taiwan, Sun moved to Portland in 2014 and became a U.S. citizen in 2022. Her unique background aligns perfectly with Lan Su's mission and values, which aim to inspire, engage, and educate the global community about authentic Chinese culture.
As the newly appointed Vice President of Culture and Community, Sun will spearhead the development of a creative and mission-driven strategy that goes beyond the traditional garden experience. Her role will involve active engagement with the community to create programs and experiences that inspire, educate, and foster appreciation for Chinese culture. She will lead initiatives that celebrate the diversity within the community and promote inclusivity.
Throughout her tenure at Lan Su, Sun has consistently demonstrated her dedication to the garden's mission. She played a pivotal role in bridging the pre-pandemic and post-pandemic eras, navigating organizational challenges with optimism and creativity. Sun has been instrumental in developing new strategies for cultural programming, enhancing visitors' understanding of Chinese traditions. Notably, she orchestrated highly successful festivals, such as the Mid-Autumn Moonlight Market in 2022 and Lunar New Year in 2023. Additionally, she initiated the "This is She" program series, which shines a spotlight on women of color leaders in Portland.
Sun expressed her vision for Lan Su, stating, "I firmly believe that Lan Su is more than just a garden; it's a place for everyone to learn, belong, and thrive. Each festival and program represents a story waiting to be told, and I'm honored to have the opportunity to bring these stories to life with a greater impact."
Lan Su's Executive Director, Elizabeth Nye, commended Sun's pivotal role within the organization, calling her an integral part of the garden's heart. "We are thrilled to appoint Venus as Vice President of Culture and Community. Her exceptional leadership and commitment to community engagement perfectly align with our vision. With her guidance, we are confident that Lan Su will continue to expand its influence in cultural education and celebration."
