Traditional Chinese opera is a popular form of drama and musical theatre in China with roots going back to the early periods in China. Early forms of Chinese theater are simple, but over time they incorporated various art forms, such as music, song and dance, martial arts, acrobatics, as well as literary art forms to become traditional Chinese opera. During the reign of Emperor Song Renzhong, General Di Qing was asked to lead an army brigade to conquer the West. However, he accidentally trespass the Kingdom of Lolan and was captured by Princess Shengyen of Lolan. The Princess fell in love with Di Qing and shortly thereafter, they got married. Emperor Song accused Di Qing of treason and immediately put his parents to prison. Being a loving son he was very anxious to return to his country to rescue his parents. The scene is about how Di Qing convinced his princess to give him back his horse and sword so that he could escape Lolan and return to save his parents. His tactic was to show the princess how unhappy he was and let the princess guess why he was unhappy. After two wrong guesses, she came to realize that the General was so sad because his horse and sword were taken away. The love to her husband was so deep that Princess Shengyen agreed to return the horse and sword to Di Qing. The General expressed his gratitude to the Princess but his will to escape was so strong that he got the Princess drunk and then escaped.
