In this presentation, long time Lan Su volunteers Ellen Bartholomew and Michael Babbit will share their passion of penjing and their creations through pictures and stories.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Michael Babbit and Ellen Bartholomew began volunteering for Lan Su in 2008 after retirement. Michael is particularly interested in plants and the early plant explorers. They also became interested in bonsai about that time, and began classes with Mark Vossbrink who is from Hawai’i and has an interest in penjing. Through his classes they began creating their own plant artwork, and their bonsai began looking more and more like penjing. They also learned how to make “Phoenix graft” chrysanthemum penjing from Mark, and began making these for Lan Su’s November Chrysanthemum Festival.
Michael and Ellen have made several visits to China, including gardens in Suzhou, Chengdu, and Hangzhou. The Bonsai Club International (BCI) Convention in ZunYi, Sichuan provided an opportunity to see large numbers of very high quality penjing and to meet their creators. They now have a yard largely landscaped with penjing of all types and have an enthusiasm for sharing this art with others.
